Coach Hazen has been coaching AYSO soccer for over 15 years, in the Recreation, Extra and Club divisions under the AYSO umbrella. “I fully believe that soccer can be taught to the next generation completely through the AYSO program using their complete system track. I hate seeing players and parents pay excessive amounts of money in order to play a game that just requires a uniform, ball, field, and referees. With correct training habits, professional trainers and challenging the players to push themselves in sessions and games, I believe I can provide the same results on the pitch as teams who’s players spend 10x the money that I do.”
Training sessions consist of about 60% of the time teaching European possession style of play (team shape, short passing combinations, body positioning on and off the ball), 20% of training time technical skills and the final 20% on teaching situational tactical understanding on and off the ball. All conditioning is done with ball work or creating game situations in training sessions that require thought, change of pace, and runs off the ball.
“As a former player, Regional Board member and now AYSO United club coach, I strive for every player that I come into contact with to really learn the nuances of the game. Not just technical ball skills, but to bring them a tactical understanding of the game. I don’t always look for the most talented ball handler, that’s helpful but not necessary. What is necessary is the drive to compete at the highest levels, to push themselves and challenge themselves to continue learning the game.”
